Keep Them Polishing
Five essential practices to maintain compound delivery and maximize felt wheel life.
Run each new felt wheel on a truing device for 10–15 minutes before production use. This flattens the contact surface and removes loose fibers.
Use a felt dressing tool once per week (or when polishing quality drops) to restore the flat contact surface and remove loaded glass particles.
Natural wool absorbs moisture. Store wheels in a dry area between shifts. Wet felt loses density and compound-holding capacity.
A worn felt wheel shows a concave contact surface. When the concavity exceeds 0.5mm, replace the wheel — continuing causes uneven polishing.
Run the wheel with clean water for 2–3 minutes at end of each shift to flush out accumulated glass particles and old compound.

For most double edger operations, start with Medium (1.5 g/cm³). It provides the best balance of compound delivery and edge conformity. Switch to Hard for initial compound loading if the edge is rough from grinding, and Soft for final buffing if mirror quality is required.
Three indicators: (1) visible concavity on the contact surface exceeding 0.5mm, (2) polishing quality drops despite compound adjustment, (3) increased vibration or noise during operation. Average life is 300–500 linear meters depending on glass type and pressure.
Synthetic felt works but performs significantly worse. It holds 40% less compound, wears 40–60% faster, and is more prone to glazing (surface hardening from glass particle loading). For cost-sensitive operations with lower quality requirements, synthetic is acceptable.
Not necessarily. The same felt wheel works with cerium oxide, rouge, and diamond paste. However, if you switch between very different compounds (e.g., cerium oxide to diamond paste), clean the felt thoroughly to prevent cross-contamination.
