Grit Selection

Choose diamond size based on target surface quality: 6μm for pre-polish, 3μm for standard mirror, 1μm for fine mirror, 0.5μm for super-polish, 0.25μm for ultra-finish.

Maintenance

Keep Them Polishing

Five essential practices to maintain super-polish quality and maximize diamond paste performance.

Never skip grit sizes. Start with 6μm and progress through 3μm, 1μm, 0.5μm, and 0.25μm. Skipping causes scratches that require re-polishing from the beginning.

Thoroughly clean the glass and polishing wheel between each grit change. Residual coarse particles in a fine grit stage cause catastrophic scratching.

Diamond polishing generates heat. Keep the glass below 40°C during polishing. Exceeding this temperature can cause thermal stress and surface crazing.

Assign specific polishing wheels to each grit size. Cross-contamination between grits is the most common cause of polishing defects.

Diamond paste dries out when exposed to air. Always reseal tubes immediately after use. Dried paste can be rehydrated with a few drops of water.
