Advantages

Why Mill-Plus-Edge

Maximum throughput, maximum efficiency. Every feature engineered for combined profiling and edging.

30–50% Cycle Time Reduction

Combining two operations into one pass cuts cycle time dramatically. For high-volume production, this translates to significantly higher throughput without additional equipment.

Segmented Diamond Design

Coarser grit in the profiling zone for material removal, finer grit in the edging zone for surface finish. Each zone is optimized for its specific function.

Seamless Transition

The boundary between profiling and edging zones is engineered to produce a invisible transition — no step, no line, no surface discontinuity.

Custom-Configurable

Choose profile geometry, grit combination, and overall diameter to match your exact edge specification. Every tool is built to order.

Maintenance

Keep Them Cutting

Essential practices to maximize tool life and maintain consistent dual-zone performance.

Mill-plus-edge tools require minimum 5kW spindle power due to the dual-zone cutting load. Operating below this power level causes incomplete profiling and accelerated tool wear.

The profiling zone and edging zone wear at different rates. Check both zones weekly — when either zone shows 50% wear, plan replacement of the entire tool.

Dual-zone cutting generates more heat than single-zone tools. Increase coolant flow 20–30% above standard milling cutter settings to prevent thermal damage to both zones.

Log linear meters processed. Average life is 1,000–3,000 linear meters — longer than individual milling cutters because the edging zone benefits from the profiling zone's material pre-removal.

Mill-plus-edge tools are heavier than standard cutters. Store vertically in protective holders to prevent damage to the diamond segments from impact or compression.

FAQ

Common Questions

Everything you need to know about mill-plus-edge combination tools.

Mill-plus-edge makes sense when: (1) you produce the same profile in high volume (>500 linear meters/day), (2) cycle time is a bottleneck, (3) you have sufficient spindle power (5kW+). For low-volume or varied profiles, separate milling cutters and edging wheels are more cost-effective.

Yes. Mill-plus-edge tools are custom-manufactured to your profile specification. Provide a profile drawing or sample piece, and Hanwin will engineer the tool geometry, grit combination, and dimensions to match.

Equivalent or better. Because both operations reference the same tool path, there are no alignment errors between profiling and edging. The surface finish is Ra 1.0–2.0μm — comparable to dedicated edging wheels.

Single tools are available for evaluation and testing. Volume pricing begins at 5 tools. For production commitments of 20+ tools annually, custom specifications and priority manufacturing are available.
